Doctors in West Bengal have expressed strong anger over the Election Commission’s handling of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, alleging inhumane treatment of elderly, seriously ill and disabled citizens. The Service Doctors Forum has warned of a major agitation against the Election Commission in the new year if the situation is not corrected.
The forum alleged that despite serious medical conditions, patients, persons with disabilities and very elderly citizens are being summoned to distant hearing centres under the claims and objections process. According to doctors, such practices are putting vulnerable people at grave physical risk and violating basic humanitarian principles.
Although the Election Commission recently directed that hearings for people above 85 years of age should be conducted at their homes, the Doctors Forum claims this order is not being followed on the ground. As a result, extremely weak and helpless elderly individuals continue to be called to hearing centres, prompting the organisation to prepare for statewide protests.
